Exchange Migration

Exchange Migration will be offered in the course of Q1/2008 as an on-site service by certified technology partners and selected resellers, to prevent any possible disruption to existing company systems. Exchange Migration project has been under development for nearly 2 years and allows IceWarp to broaden its product portfolio and consolidate market share in communication server software.

TCO Considerations

According to a recent survey carried out by consulting firm Ferris Research, businesses running MS Exchange suffer from unpredictable TCO and extra costs for running the software, with labor cost for system maintenance and user support accounting for almost 90% of the overall yearly costs.

  • Operations for Exchange typically cost $5.8 per user per month
  • For 100 user installation this represents $6,960 per year
  • Desktop support staff generally spends 20% of time just on Exchange issues
  • Downtime on Exchange generally averages 0.4 hrs per mailbox per month
  • For 100 user installation this represents $18,000 in annual productivity costs

Technical Considerations

Fact: 20% of mail servers globally are running Exchange. From them, nearly 20% is the discontinued 5.5 version. Even administrators who took the decision to upgrade have to deal with serious limitations in software compatibility, delayed bug-fixes, new hardware requirements and migration downtime.

  • There are 80% installations of 2000, 18% of 5.5
  • Old versions suffer from security & stability issues
  • Lack of bug-fixes, 5.5 no longer supported
  • Migration from 5.5 requires intermediate upgrade to 2000
  • Upgrades can't be performed in place
  • Incompatibility of old Exchange with new OS versions and vice versa

How It Works

A crucial part of the migration process is thorough planning and consulations. After that, engineer will schedule a remote desktop sharing session with the customer and perform a test migration on a subset of accounts. After customer reviews the results, he can decide to arrange an appointment with the engineer to perform the migration on-site.

  • Requires Windows 2000, 2003 Workstation/Server
  • New IceWarp Server with GroupWare (even in 30 day trial)
  • On-site migration
  • Exchange server should be stopped during migration
  • Takes 1MB per second of Exchange storage, approx. 1000 items per minute

IceWarp Exchange Migration Tool is now offered as public Beta. You are free to use the tool at your own risk. Brief documentation is included within the download.
